Gary L. Medlin founded Dallas DWI Lawyers to focus on one area of criminal law where early decisions shape everything that follows: DWI defense. He has been licensed to practice in Texas since 1983 and is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a credential that requires ongoing peer review and examination.
Gary earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1982. His career since then has centered on criminal defense in Texas courts, with a particular concentration on DWI cases involving breath and blood testing, license hearings, felony charges, and intoxication-related offenses.

Gary spent nearly a decade as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County before moving to the defense side. During those years, he prosecuted criminal cases across a wide range of charges, including DWI and intoxication offenses. That background gives him a working understanding of how prosecutors build DWI cases, what evidence they rely on most heavily, and where their case preparation tends to have gaps.
He has practiced criminal defense since 1993. In DWI cases specifically, his approach involves examining every stage of the case from the initial traffic stop through chemical testing and administrative license proceedings. He has written on DWI defense strategy as a contributor to Inside the Minds (Aspatore Books) and has presented on breath-test issues and trial preparation at professional education events.
Gary is admitted to practice in all Texas state courts and in several federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He has held leadership positions in the legal community, including President of the Tarrant County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and Chair of the District Seven Grievance Committee of the State Bar of Texas.
If you are facing a DWI charge in Dallas or the surrounding area, Gary and his team will review the facts of your case, explain what you are up against, and lay out the defense options that apply to your specific situation. The goal is to make sure you understand the charge, the evidence, and the deadlines before making any decisions about how to proceed.
