Our firm is led by Gary L. Medlin, who has practiced law in Texas since 1983 and has been board-certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1989. Fewer than one percent of Texas lawyers hold this credential, and it is reserved for attorneys who have practiced for at least five years, focused a significant portion of their practice on criminal law, and passed a rigorous six‑hour exam. Board certification signals a high level of skill and dedication, a distinction that sets us apart in a crowded field of DWI defense practitioners.

Why Board Certification Matters

Board certification isn’t simply an honorific milestone. According to the Texas District & County Attorneys Association, achieving this credential shows that a lawyer is committed to improving the competency of the local and state bar. Applicants must practice for at least five years and devote at least 25 percent of their time to criminal law. They must also serve as lead counsel in a specified number of felony and misdemeanor trials and appeals before being allowed to take the exam. Because only 783 attorneys in Texas (less than one percent) are board-certified in criminal law, clients benefit from an advocate whose knowledge has been tested and recognized at the highest level. Gary L. Medlin: Our Founding Attorney

Gary earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1982. He began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County, serving for more than eight years. That experience gave him a unique perspective on how prosecutors build DWI cases and the tactics they use in court. Since founding Dallas DWI Lawyers, Gary has focused exclusively on criminal defense and has handled thousands of cases. He is admitted to practice in Texas state courts, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Gary is also a past president of the Tarrant County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. His peers have recognized his professionalism with an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale‑Hubbell, reflecting the highest level of professional excellence.

Our Team’s Prosecutorial & Law‑Enforcement Insight

Jess Gambrell served as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County and an Assistant County Attorney in Williamson County, prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases from intake through jury trial and appeal. He draws on that background to challenge evidence, suppress illegal stops and protect your rights.
Edward “EJ” Odre worked at the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, where he tried DWI and assault–family violence cases. His time in that office taught him how prosecutors build their cases and the weaknesses that can be exploited. He is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and brings military discipline and dedication to every defense.
Cody Gomora brings law‑enforcement insight that most defense lawyers simply don’t have. Before becoming an attorney, he served as an Arlington police officer for four years, working as an academy instructor and use‑of‑force reporting expert. After leaving the police force, he spent one year as a prosecutor in Tarrant County. His combined police and prosecutorial background allows him to scrutinize arrest reports, field sobriety tests, and breath or blood tests from the inside out. Cody is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, and his practice includes trial work, DWI, drug offenses and assault.

DWI Case Results & Trial Experience

We measure our success by results. Dallas DWI Lawyers has earned numerous not‑guilty verdicts and dismissals in DWI cases by challenging illegal stops, suppressing unreliable tests and insisting on full compliance with constitutional protections. Examples include:

Open‑Container DWI – Not Guilty: A client was stopped for allegedly changing lanes. We filed a motion to suppress, arguing that the lane change was lawful. The judge agreed, ruling that the police lacked reasonable suspicion. Evidence was suppressed and the court directed a not‑guilty verdict.
DWI With Blood Test – Not Guilty: In another case, a driver was arrested after field sobriety tests and a blood test showing a 0.117% blood‑alcohol concentration. We challenged the traffic stop and suppressed the blood test results. The jury returned a not‑guilty verdict after only ten minutes of deliberation.
Illegal Stop – Directed Verdict: After more than two years of litigation and numerous court appearances, the court agreed that our client had been unlawfully stopped. The judge granted a directed verdict of not guilty, ending the case.
DWI With Prior – Not Guilty: A client facing a second DWI charge and the potential loss of a commercial driver’s license was acquitted after we demonstrated that the standardized field sobriety tests and blood‑alcohol evidence were unreliable.
High‑BAC DWI – Not Guilty: In a case where the breath test showed a 0.154/.151 BAC, we argued that the detention was unlawful. The judge agreed and directed the jury to acquit.
