About Dallas DWI Lawyers

Our Commitment & Experience

We are a team of DWI defense attorneys who have spent years on both sides of the courtroom in North Texas. Dallas DWI Lawyers was founded by Gary L. Medlin, a board-certified criminal law attorney who has practiced in Texas since 1983. Today, the Dallas office is led by Jess Gambrell, a former prosecutor who brings roughly six years of felony and misdemeanor trial experience from the other side of the aisle. Between the attorneys on our team, we carry more than seven decades of combined criminal and DWI defense experience. That depth matters when your driver’s license, your record, and your freedom are at stake.

Our founding attorney, Gary L. Medlin, has been board-certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1989. Fewer than one percent of Texas lawyers hold this credential. It requires at least five years of practice concentrated in criminal law, lead-counsel experience in a specified number of felony and misdemeanor trials, and passage of a rigorous six-hour examination. That credential backs every case our firm handles.

Why Board Certification Matters

Board certification is not an honorary title. According to the Texas District & County Attorneys Association, achieving this credential demonstrates a commitment to improving the competency of the local and state bar. Applicants must devote at least 25 percent of their practice to criminal law, serve as lead counsel in qualifying trials and appeals, and pass a comprehensive exam. Because only 783 attorneys in Texas (less than one percent) are board-certified in criminal law, clients benefit from an advocate whose preparation and knowledge have been independently tested. Board certification is a permanent credential, which means you have a firm whose foundation has been verified at every level.

Protect Your Future With Dallas DWI Lawyers

Jess Gambrell: Leading Our Dallas Practice

Jess Gambrell grew up in Tarrant County, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pitzer College, and received his Juris Doctor from Baylor University School of Law. Before turning to defense work, he spent roughly six years as a prosecutor, serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County and an Assistant County Attorney in Williamson County. In those roles, he handled cases from intake through jury trial and appeal, including misdemeanors, felonies, and capital murder.

That prosecutorial background shapes how he approaches every DWI case. He understands how officers are trained to document a traffic stop, what prosecutors look for in breath and blood test results before going to trial, and how plea negotiations work behind closed doors. He also spent a decade working in logistics before law school, which gives him a practical understanding of what clients face when a DWI charge threatens their job, their license, and their daily routine.

Jess is licensed to practice in Texas and the Eastern District of the United States. He is an active member of the Texas Bar College and the Tarrant County Bar Association.

Gary L. Medlin Dallas DWI Defense Attorney

Gary L. Medlin: Our Founding Attorney

Gary earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1982. He began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County, serving for more than eight years. That experience gave him a clear view of how prosecutors build DWI cases and the pressure points they rely on in court. Since founding Dallas DWI Lawyers, Gary has focused on criminal defense and has handled thousands of cases. He is admitted to practice in Texas state courts, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Gary is a past president of the Tarrant County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. His peers have recognized his professionalism with an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

Our Team’s Prosecutorial & Law‑Enforcement Insight

Our advantage comes from having attorneys who have worked on both sides of the courtroom. This experience means we understand how police officers and prosecutors approach DWI cases, and we can anticipate their strategies.

  • Jess Gambrell served as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County and an Assistant County Attorney in Williamson County, prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases from intake through jury trial and appeal. He draws on that background to challenge evidence, suppress illegal stops and protect your rights.

Our team’s prosecutorial and law-enforcement experience gives us insight into the way DWI cases are built, from the initial traffic stop to evidence collection and courtroom strategy. That perspective helps us identify problems in the State’s case early.

DWI Case Results & Trial Experience

We measure our success by results. Dallas DWI Lawyers has earned numerous not‑guilty verdicts and dismissals in DWI cases by challenging illegal stops, suppressing unreliable tests and insisting on full compliance with constitutional protections. Examples include:

  • Open‑Container DWI – Not Guilty: A client was stopped for allegedly changing lanes. We filed a motion to suppress, arguing that the lane change was lawful. The judge agreed, ruling that the police lacked reasonable suspicion. Evidence was suppressed and the court directed a not‑guilty verdict.
  • DWI With Blood Test – Not Guilty: In another case, a driver was arrested after field sobriety tests and a blood test showing a 0.117% blood‑alcohol concentration. We challenged the traffic stop and suppressed the blood test results. The jury returned a not‑guilty verdict after only ten minutes of deliberation.
  • Illegal Stop – Directed Verdict: After more than two years of litigation and numerous court appearances, the court agreed that our client had been unlawfully stopped. The judge granted a directed verdict of not guilty, ending the case.
  • DWI With Prior – Not Guilty: A client facing a second DWI charge and the potential loss of a commercial driver’s license was acquitted after we demonstrated that the standardized field sobriety tests and blood‑alcohol evidence were unreliable.
  • High‑BAC DWI – Not Guilty: In a case where the breath test showed a 0.154/.151 BAC, we argued that the detention was unlawful. The judge agreed and directed the jury to acquit.

These results show our ability to identify weaknesses in the prosecution’s case and use them to our clients’ advantage. While every case is unique, these outcomes demonstrate that a strong defense can make the difference between a conviction and an acquittal.

Our Approach to DWI Defense

When you choose Dallas DWI Lawyers, you get a team that prepares every case as if it were going to trial. We start by reviewing the facts of your stop, your arrest, and every piece of testing evidence. We look for problems in the officer’s reasonable suspicion, the probable cause for arrest, field sobriety test administration, and breath or blood testing procedures. Because our firm is founded by a board-certified criminal law attorney and our Dallas practice is led by a former prosecutor, we hold ourselves to a standard of preparation that matches the seriousness of what you are facing. When a case needs to go to trial, we are ready.

How We Support You

A DWI charge can affect your license, your job, your insurance, and your criminal record. You do not have to sort through that alone. When you retain us, you can expect direct communication, honest answers about your case, and a defense plan built around the facts. We treat every client with respect, and we work toward the strongest available outcome, whether that means challenging the evidence in court, negotiating a reduction, or taking the case to a jury.
