Today, the Dallas office is led by Jess Gambrell, a former prosecutor who brings roughly six years of felony and misdemeanor trial experience from the other side of the aisle. Our founding attorney, Gary L. Medlin, has been board-certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1989. Fewer than one percent of Texas lawyers hold this credential. It requires at least five years of practice concentrated in criminal law, lead-counsel experience in a specified number of felony and misdemeanor trials, and passage of a rigorous six-hour examination. That credential backs every case our firm handles.
Board certification is not an honorary title. According to the Texas District & County Attorneys Association, achieving this credential demonstrates a commitment to improving the competency of the local and state bar. Applicants must devote at least 25 percent of their practice to criminal law, serve as lead counsel in qualifying trials and appeals, and pass a comprehensive exam. Because only 783 attorneys in Texas (less than one percent) are board-certified in criminal law, clients benefit from an advocate whose preparation and knowledge have been independently tested. Board certification is a permanent credential, which means you have a firm whose foundation has been verified at every level.
Jess Gambrell grew up in Tarrant County, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pitzer College, and received his Juris Doctor from Baylor University School of Law. Before turning to defense work, he spent roughly six years as a prosecutor, serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County and an Assistant County Attorney in Williamson County. In those roles, he handled cases from intake through jury trial and appeal, including misdemeanors, felonies, and capital murder.
That prosecutorial background shapes how he approaches every DWI case. He understands how officers are trained to document a traffic stop, what prosecutors look for in breath and blood test results before going to trial, and how plea negotiations work behind closed doors. He also spent a decade working in logistics before law school, which gives him a practical understanding of what clients face when a DWI charge threatens their job, their license, and their daily routine.
Jess is licensed to practice in Texas and the Eastern District of the United States. He is an active member of the Texas Bar College and the Tarrant County Bar Association.
Gary earned his Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in 1979 and his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1982. He began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County, serving for more than eight years. That experience gave him a clear view of how prosecutors build DWI cases and the pressure points they rely on in court. Since founding Dallas DWI Lawyers, Gary has focused on criminal defense and has handled thousands of cases. He is admitted to practice in Texas state courts, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Gary is a past president of the Tarrant County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. His peers have recognized his professionalism with an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
